No matter where I look I seem to be being marketed things for me to ‘save time’. Whether that’s on shopping, cooking or even working out. It feels like our addiction to being busy means we have more ‘free time’ than ever thanks to apps and deliveries and scheduling but… for what?
What do we need more free time for? To doom scroll? To bed rot?*
We have become obsessed with efficiency over everything, and forgotten that life is not always about being the most effective and productive version of ourselves - sometimes the longer and slower road is a much more enjoyable journey - and in fact what life is truly about. Instant gratification has made us forget that there’s a beauty in taking your time. We live in a juxtaposition of wanting to save time but also being constantly busy. We love the ease of not having to go anywhere or having to leave the house (and I am completely guilty of this, by the way). Everything is almost too easy, accessible. We use less and less effort to do things. Is that a good thing?
Of course there’s an ease to not having to leave the house often. And ease is a wonderful thing. I don’t think we need to be making life harder for ourselves, but we’ve started to confuse effort with hardship. Have we forgotten that leaving the house and interacting and being is literally what life is about? Life happens when you’re doing things.
